About Liverpool Airport (LPL)

Liverpool Airport (LPL) is an international airport serving the North-West England with a focus on Liverpool. It is built in the city of Liverpool close to River Mersey estuary. It is also known as “John Lennon Airport” and handles local and international flights. Year 2010 registered over 5 million passengers using the airport which made it the 10th busiest airport in the UK.

Having started flights in 1930 the airport was officially opened in 1933. Royal Air Force used it during World War II. The fastest air combat took place nearby on 8 October 1940. Civil operations were resumed at LPL after the war. The place has developed ever since. A runway was opened in 1966 and a passenger terminal was ready in 1986. At present LPL is operated by Liverpool Airport PLC.

The airport has one modern terminal, the older one having been turned into a hotel. There are 30 check-in desks, six gates and a large conference centre in the terminal building. The conference centre is known as the “Cavern Suite”. Some facilities are the exchange office, the ATMs, a prayer room and disabled facilities. Fast foods and shops are fairly varied.

Transport links are made by road (motorways M 53, M 56, M 57, and M 62) and the nearest train station is Liverpool South Parkway, accessible by bus shuttle. Car parking, car hire and taxis are available at the airport whereas bus services make connection to nearest urban areas.
